Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
This podcast features Harvey Lewis III, a very accomplished ultra runner, plant based eater and inspirational man.
He has run the Badwater 135 mile ultra 10 times winning the race in 2014 and 2021. He is a schoolteacher by day and has been commuting to work under human power for over 6 years. It is his goal to spread the word of health through plant based nutrition and running.
We discuss his training and mental preparation as well as his plant based philosophy. I was very interested in his metabolism, and how he can absorb enough calories to maintain his running. How does he run 354 miles and then return to running in just a few days without soreness or injury? What is his “why” for running so long? We tackle these and many more topics today. I hope you enjoy my chat with Harvey.

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 324 with Ali Jahn
Friday Oct 22, 2021
Friday Oct 22, 2021
Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Life is a journey as “they” say, and it rarely goes as we imagine. Perhaps those jolt-like twists and turns can be an awakening to a new and better path. Today’s guest, Ali Jahn, experienced some life changing events that led her to a path of optimism and action. Having a diagnosis of breast cancer certainly makes one examine one’s own mortality. But for Ali, it was an opportunity to learn and strive for a healthier future.
October is breast cancer awareness month. Instead of giving a few dollars here and there to fight for a cure, I challenge you to look at your own health, and see if you can change your risk factors for breast cancer. While doing that, you will also change your risk for other cancers, heart disease, improve your immune function and improve your musculoskeletal health. Is your body mass index or BMI normal? Do you exercise 2.5 to 5 hours a week at a moderate intensity or 2.5 hours at a vigorous intensity? Are you eating a plant-based diet that is unprocessed, colorful, and mostly organic? What is your alcohol consumption? Can you decrease your environmental toxins such as self-care products, pesticides, household chemicals?
I hope you enjoy my conversation with Ali, and have a healthy, hopeful, and active life.
Thank you for listening.

How many people blame their orthopedic problems on adolescent injuries? According to the CDC about 58.5 million adults have arthritis. 43.9% of those people report that it is an activity limiter.
50% of those greater than age 65 are unable to work or are disabled because of arthritis. 51% classify their health as poor. Over half of these people have BMIs that are classified as obese. Are all of these people suffering from overuse or traumatic injuries? Why do adolescent injuries only begin to show up in the 5th or 6th decade of life?
Osteoarthritis was once thought of as overuse or traumatic in etiology. However, there is a large inflammatory component if examined at the cellular level.
I believe the medical community has done another great disservice by promoting a similar dialogue of hopelessness. It is damaged and will never be the same. It will always hurt. You can take this pain medication to ease the symptoms. By the way there are side effects. We have a medication for those. Move if you can. Oh, by the way here are some special shoes and a brace that will help. It was probably caused by playing sports or carrying heavy objects so avoid those things. What?????????
Let’s change the channel, shall we? What happens to a door that is never opened? It freezes shut. The hinges rust, the pant fades, and the wood rots. The wood that was once a vibrant tree supplied with nutrients by the roots and sun. The metal hinges that were once minerals in the earth have been exposed to the elements and degrade. Perhaps if we take the inflammatory foods off our plate, and move our bodies, we can keep the most wonderful moving object ever to roam the planet free from pain and destruction for many more years.
I hope you enjoy the podcast. Thank you for listening.

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 322-Give to Get and Get to Give

Welcome! and Thank you for listening. I would also like to thank those attending the webinar and for all of your wonderful feedback.
One of the features of Blue Zoners or octogenarians as noted by Dan Buettner is their social connectedness or sense of purpose. Sometimes we link our occupation to our sense of purpose so much that we out it we become isolated. Occupation and family are linked with a sense of purpose traditionally, but there are many other things that can link us to other people. Belonging to a specific group or community can also provide a strong sense of purpose.
Interacting with others is somewhat like a chemical bond in that energy is released and shared. That energy can be felt in a variety of ways. Some of which are motivation and joy. The simplest of acts such as a good morning or noticing someone's name tag can change both the recipient and the givers mood. Cheering for strangers result in new found energy for them in a race. The football team is motivated to keep trying. In the world of social media, sharing your creativity or acknowledging someone else's can be motivating. The smallest acts can have profound impact, and it starts with one person giving a little of themselves to start the ball rolling.
I challenge you to make someones day. I hope I make yours.

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
Most people thinking of switching to a plant based diet worry about getting “enough of “ and in particular “enough calcium”. Most are not exactly sure about all the things calcium is used for, but most associate calcium with bone health. Thank you dairy association. However, calcium is vital to muscle contractions and a multitude of other bodily chemical reactions. People tend to worry about their bones when indeed as we age, we tend to get calcium in all the wrong places.
Micro or small calcifications in the breast have been associated with an increased risk of cancer. They are also associated with a history of birth control use and natural aging. When are they ok, and when are they bad? We see calcium in scar tissue. Most recently, calcium in the coronary arteries have been associated with coronary artery disease. Screening x-rays often show the presence of calcium in older folks and has led to more intense x-rays such as CAT scans to calculate exactly where and how much calcium there is in these “wrong places”. Is calcium in arteries all bad? Is calcium a smoking gun detector for wide spread cardiovascular disease? A recent study published in the in the British Medical Journal looks at coronary calcium and exercise. This will be the topic of this podcast.
Spoiler alert: KEEP EXERCISING!
If you liked this podcast, and you have more questions, you can join Addie Majnaric, RDN and I this Thursday for a live Zoom Webinar. Link to purchase tickets is below. We will be making 6 fall recipes and discussing all things health and nutrition. I look forward to speaking with you.

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 320: Magic Menu
Friday Sep 24, 2021
Friday Sep 24, 2021
Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Magic menu, magic health, magic weight loss: I have all the answers!
Even David Copperfield will tell you that it is just an illusion. Perhaps that is what keeps us coming back. The belief that we can be surprised before our very eyes. The truth is that a magician has to perform a trick 1000s of times before it is truly magical. We only focus on the finished product. We want to look behind the curtain, but the reality is that we really only want the magic.
I will give you instructions for the magic menu in this podcast. You have to practice the performance.
Addie Majnaric RDN and I will be doing a little magic September 30, 2021 with a live Zoom Nutrition Conference on fall foods. We will help you to prepare for the fall cooking season, and help you change up some fall menu favorites. Go on over to doctordulaney.com to purchase tickets. You will receive a zoom invitation for the live event and have access to the recorded version for a week. We will be taking questions during the conference and a week after, and we will send you all of the recipes. It can be your magic fall menu! Email me with questions at jami@doctordulaney.com

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 319: Alamo City Ultra
Thursday Sep 16, 2021
Thursday Sep 16, 2021
Welcome! and Thank you for listening. The Alamo City Ultra is in the books! Thank you Rob Goyen and the Trails over Texas Ultra company for putting on a great 50 K ultra.
What business does a 59 yr old physician from Florida have running in the woods in Texas? What could possibly be gained from rocks, roots, heat, and railroad ties? Can you even eat plant based and run?
Can you run your way to health? If so, how long does it last? Can you achieve ultra fitness then glide into the sunset without exercising any more?
I did not realize I was born to run until I was 40. I have never been called light on my feet or nimble. But I do love a challenge and the chance to improve myself along my life's journey.
I hope you enjoy my running tails with a little health thrown in for good measure. Thank you for listening!

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 318: Food Matters
Friday Sep 03, 2021
Friday Sep 03, 2021
Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
I think most people listening to this podcast believe that plant based nutrition can prevent and reverse lifestyle diseases. But what about infectious diseases? Do we fight infectious diseases or not let them get a hold in the first place? Is sterilizing the environment with chemicals and prophylaxis with vaccines the answer? Or should the focus be more directed on the health of the individual?
We definitely have food deserts in the USA where cheap processed foods are cheaper and more assessable than fresh fruits and vegetables. But there is also a choice in a lot of instances that requires a little more personal effort.
Today, I compare a grocery cart of $150.00 worth of fresh vs processed foods to feed a family of 4 for the week. You may be surprised with the amount of whole organic foods I was able to put in a cart for that price. While children can survive on calories, in order to thrive they need fresh fruits and vegetables with minimal chemical contamination.
Study after study shows low fat, high fiber, and high nutrient content to be associated with less disease. Yet, we turn to processed foods and supplements for our health.
Most people would agree that health is number one when it comes to things most valuable. Nutrition is the number one ingredient for health yet we delegate it to fast food companies, and large chemical corporations that make processed foods in boxes that promise nutrition.

Today I am joined by Katy Bowman. Bestselling author, speaker, and a leader in the Movement movement, bio mechanist Katy Bowman is changing the way we move and think about our need for movement. Her nine books, including the groundbreaking “Move Your DNA” and “Movement Matters”, have been translated into more than a dozen languages worldwide. Bowman teaches movement globally and speaks about sedentarism and movement ecology to academic and scientific audiences. Her work has been featured in diverse media such as the Today Show, CBC Radio One, the Seattle Times, and Good Housekeeping. One of Maria Shriver’s “Architects of Change” and America Walks “Woman of the Walking Movement,” she has worked with companies like Patagonia, Nike, and Google as well as a wide range of non-profits and other communities, sharing her “move more, move more body parts, move more for what you need” message. Her movement education company, Nutritious Movement, is based in Washington State, where she lives with her family. Learn more at nutritiousmovement.com.
One of my favorite things to do is observe people in the grocery store or airport. How do their hips move? Is their head way out in front of their body? Are they looking down? Falling forward? I am victim to my own scrutiny as well. What is my posture at the end of a marathon or triathlon? How to do I stand when giving a talk or at the counter preparing a meal? What hurts or is stiff? Can I do movements that I did as a younger person. How do I move my body throughout my day or on the weekends doing gardening or yardwork?
Are these changes a reflection of aging muscles or even deeper changes within our own cellular structure. How might we affect aging by becoming more mobile?
Katy and I discuss these things and more. She is a wealth of knowledge and ideas that I believe can help you and your family. Enjoy the interview. Links to her website, podcast, and books are listed below.

How do we affect positive change in a world that is so divided? I believe it starts at home. Living in harmony in our personal environments then translates to harmony extended into the world around us. We cannot depend on others to affect positive change if we make no efforts ourselves. We are over a year into a pandemic with little direction on how to make ourselves healthier from the medical community other than vaccinate.
We live a fast paced, hack driven, drive through, quick fix, world, centered on the get it now with the least amount of effort. Our food and water sources have been contaminated with the chemicals needed for quick mass production of mono-crops geared at convenience foods. Our society has become obese and at the same time nutrient deficient. We have attempted to sanitize and destroy our micro-environments both in nature and our individual bodies to the point that we are no longer in balance with the trillions of micro species that we share the planet with.
The response to these failed attempts at living in harmony with nature has been a war on nature that we will not win.
This podcast is about positive change. This podcast is not repeating the errors of history. This podcast is how to start in your own microenvironment and make positive changes for your health and those around you and those to come in the future.
I hope you will gain peace and purpose from this podcast and eliminate fear that has no place in a healthy environment.
Thank you for listening.
