Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 390: Why?
Thursday May 26, 2022
Thursday May 26, 2022
Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
Why is the fundamental question when it comes to finding a solution. My heart goes out to the families in Uvalde, Texas. How do we end these recurrent acts of violence in our communities. We argue about more police or less guns as a quick fix or deterrent. While these things may help, we need to address the fundamental question of why? Why is there so much anger in young men that they would repeatedly take the lives of innocent strangers? The most recent shooter purchased weapons and massive amounts of ammunition without anyone raising concern. He posted messages announcing his plans and they were ignored. Most likely he had been ignored for a long time as well. Our communities have been isolated and separated. We turn a blind eye towards neighbors in need until tragedy occurs.
We turn a blind eye as health providers and consumers as well. We ignore signs and symptoms of underlying illness and then patch with pills and procedures. Let's treat the why and quit patching symptoms. What is the root cause of most life style diseases? It is the food we eat and how we move. Mental toughness, mental fortitude or simple mindfulness allows us to assess the changes we need to make. We are not helpless. Consistency is the key to success whether training for a marathon or regaining health.
Get a calendar and keep score of the days you exercise and what you did. Plan your meals and shop accordingly. Stand your ground with the your choices and keep your why clearly visible. You will not hurt anyone by eating healthy, and you might just help someone when you are not looking. It is time we ask why.

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
We all agree that a normal BMI decreases cancer risk and recurrence as well as cardiovascular disease. But how that is achieved results in a continuous stream of advice and hacks on how to accomplish most easily and quickly.
I do not believe it is as much when we eat as it is what we eat. Intermittent fasting is another word for intermittent eating which is another word for time restricted feeding.
What we do need some rules or accountability. We all have circadian rhythms that guide our wake and sleep times as well as hormonal outputs and our hunger.
My takeaway thoughts:
Mindful eating is better achieved on a schedule that is congruent with your lifestyle. What is your work schedule? Travel schedule? Family schedule?
It you eat on a schedule; you are more likely to be mindful of what you are consuming.
Do you think Doctors need more nutritional education? You might be surprised who is against it.

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast: Episode 388 Happy Birthday Diva!
Thursday May 12, 2022
Thursday May 12, 2022
Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Happy 89th Birthday Diva!
Longevity vs health span? What are some observations that I have made following my mom’s health span?
Being social and interacting with others is something the Diva has excelled at.
Positive mental attitude or even more a “can do” attitude has been her approach to life.
Plant based nutrition of course. More importantly avoiding toxic metabolites.
Move your body. Saving it will not prolong it. The Diva gets her steps in, does yoga, golfs and takes care of her house.
Maintaining strength is perhaps more important than muscle mass for longevity. Get a grip on it and lift it!
Soy is a good thing and need not be avoided. In fact, there are essentially no side effects and it might beat tamoxifen in some breast cancers. How do you get your soy? I drink soy milk, use miso, eat tofu and tempeh and use low sodium soy sauce.

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast: Episode 387-Choosing Wisely
Friday May 06, 2022
Friday May 06, 2022
Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
What percentage of improvement would you need to have before choosing a medication or procedure? Would it matter if it was a relative risk reduction or absolute risk reduction? How do side effects factor in?
Is decreasing a particular disease the same as all cause mortality reduction. How do you become your own health advocate?
First of all, you have a right to know and fully understand. You are your best advocate, and you may or may not be like the other people in the study. I will try to tease some of these topics out during this episode. The water is deep and muddy so hang on!

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
What are you eating for? A common reaction is stress eating. Was your goal accomplished. Most of the time that is temporary. A short, feel good moment. Goal achieved. But then the guilt sets in. Why, the goal was achieved? The guilt is because we all know the real reason to eat is for energy and nutrition. Did the junk food provide energy? Often, yes. The problem is that there was more energy and less nutrition than what was needed. The excess energy and waste lead to ill health overtime.
Sometimes we have the goal of building muscle or recovering from work. What is the best fuel? What is the best fuel for regular metabolic function? There are as many answers as you would like to spend time researching.
How about we keep it simple.
Common goals: health, performance, longevity.
Let’s see how well I sorted this out for you today. Thanks for listening.

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast: Why oh Why Would You Do That
Friday Apr 22, 2022
Friday Apr 22, 2022
Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
Happy Earth Day! My mangos are growing. My different varieties of tomatoes are flourishing on my tower garden. Parsley and dill are thriving in the raised beds along with kale and swiss chard. If you have not seen Kiss the Ground, check it out. You will want to make your backyard a food forest.
Why oh why? Know your why and focus on your why and you have a better chance of success. The more specific and personal the why is, the better. We do things that matter to us. The other part of the success equation is enjoying the journey. If you do not like the journey to your why, it will be much more difficult to continue to keep it front and center. We cannot create or suggest a why to someone else. It is personal choice.
Perhaps I can give you some tips on this podcast or shed a little light on how you might go about focusing on your why or narrowing it down.
Did you know that exercise can boost your immune system? Can you do too much? Spoiler alert. Nutrition matters.

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 384- Brazos Bend 50 Mile Race
Thursday Apr 14, 2022
Thursday Apr 14, 2022
Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
Brazos Bend 50 Mile race is successfully in the books!
13 hour and 4 seconds. Three 16.8 mile loops.
This podcast is a recap of the race. Like life there were bumps in the road. However, everything seems to work out if you can keep putting one foot in front of the other. Life and the timer continues to move even if you stop so it is best to keep in motion. I am convinced we humans thrive best if we keep moving. I paid close attention to the fluids and nutrition I consumed during the race. Without doing that the outcome could have been much worse. I was fueling for my desired goal. I think that is perhaps the best lesson I can share. Whether you are racing or living day to day life, fueling your body for the desired outcome is the most important aspect of achieving that outcome. Poor food choices lead to bad outcomes like lifestyle diseases. The problem is the consequences are not necessarily appreciated that day. For most, goals are changed to fit declining health status. Instead of being active, the outcome is to just exist and be a spectator of life. Survive instead of thrive.
Have you been labeled with bad knees or a bad back? Do you have chronic conditions that limit your activities. Are those stories limiting you more than they need to be? Have a listen to the podcast and perhaps you might just realize you have just scratched the surface of your potential.

Osteoporosis is a diagnosis that is said to just happen. You wake up one day and get the diagnosis. Sometimes people fall first, but largely the diagnosis is made by a DEXA scan. So now what do you do? Medication ? Supplements? I have a better solution. Prevention and personal intervention.
Prevention starts young. Lessing the disease
later. Avoiding complications starts now. I will discuss what to eat and how to move as great alternative therapies.
Ackee.... Mamey sapote... two fruits I will be sharing stories of this podcast. Warning! Don't eat without reading the directions. That said don't miss out on a one of natures greatest surprises.

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
As they say, "You've come a long way baby". Or not. Dwight Eisenhower died of a heart attack in 1969. War on heart disease was declared by then Vice President Nixon. It seems that the war on heart disease has been our longest war with many casualties. About 650,000 die each year for 52 years is about 33 million people through 2021. Not to belittle this, but the deaths from World War II were in the 60 million arena.
There are many opinions on why we have not got a handle on heart disease despite all of the interventions and medications available. We all agree that diet plays a great role, because everyone says to eat a healthy diet to prevent heart disease. But what is a healthy diet?
The short answer is not to worry about enough of but focus on the too much of concept. After World War II, there was a valid concern that we could not feed the human population. Agribusiness stepped in with nitrogen based fertilizers and the development of mono-crops such as corn, soybean and wheat spread wildly. Now we have food within eye shot of most hours of the day. You can even get dinner at the gas station. So is it the gas companies that are the blame for heart disease?
Waste not want not. How do we stop eating all of the food that is available? Do we need a pill? Or can we do some simple changes that help a lot. Let's talk. Thanks for listening.

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 381: Intangibles
Friday Mar 18, 2022
Friday Mar 18, 2022
Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
Intangibles as defined by Webster’s dictionary, are things unable to be touched, or are vague and abstract. They are not easily grasped or precisely measurable. This episode will try to shed some light on how we might train intangibles on a journey to becoming plant based.
Should you get dental x-rays when asymptomatic or before a dentist has even examines your mouth? I might be ranting about that as well. We don’t ask why and how that might benefit my health near enough in our health care decisions.
Corporate sponsors of the ADA include but not limited to Henry Schein Corp. (an S&P Fortune 500 company providing dental practice solutions), Cogate, Proctor and Gamble, Crest and Waterpik just to name a few. So just like the AMA, policy is heavily influenced by corporate interests.
Can you wait until you are older to change to a healthy diet? There is certainly benefit at any age, but I discuss some recently published studies linking early age diet with later health costs and illness.
