Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
Most people thinking of switching to a plant based diet worry about getting “enough of “ and in particular “enough calcium”. Most are not exactly sure about all the things calcium is used for, but most associate calcium with bone health. Thank you dairy association. However, calcium is vital to muscle contractions and a multitude of other bodily chemical reactions. People tend to worry about their bones when indeed as we age, we tend to get calcium in all the wrong places.
Micro or small calcifications in the breast have been associated with an increased risk of cancer. They are also associated with a history of birth control use and natural aging. When are they ok, and when are they bad? We see calcium in scar tissue. Most recently, calcium in the coronary arteries have been associated with coronary artery disease. Screening x-rays often show the presence of calcium in older folks and has led to more intense x-rays such as CAT scans to calculate exactly where and how much calcium there is in these “wrong places”. Is calcium in arteries all bad? Is calcium a smoking gun detector for wide spread cardiovascular disease? A recent study published in the in the British Medical Journal looks at coronary calcium and exercise. This will be the topic of this podcast.
Spoiler alert: KEEP EXERCISING!

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 320: Magic Menu
Friday Sep 24, 2021
Friday Sep 24, 2021
Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Magic menu, magic health, magic weight loss: I have all the answers!
Even David Copperfield will tell you that it is just an illusion. Perhaps that is what keeps us coming back. The belief that we can be surprised before our very eyes. The truth is that a magician has to perform a trick 1000s of times before it is truly magical. We only focus on the finished product. We want to look behind the curtain, but the reality is that we really only want the magic.
I will give you instructions for the magic menu in this podcast. You have to practice the performance.
Addie Majnaric RDN and I will be doing a little magic September 30, 2021 with a live Zoom Nutrition Conference on fall foods. We will help you to prepare for the fall cooking season, and help you change up some fall menu favorites. Go on over to doctordulaney.com to purchase tickets. You will receive a zoom invitation for the live event and have access to the recorded version for a week. We will be taking questions during the conference and a week after, and we will send you all of the recipes. It can be your magic fall menu! Email me with questions at jami@doctordulaney.com
Thanks for listening!

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 319: Alamo City Ultra
Thursday Sep 16, 2021
Thursday Sep 16, 2021
Welcome! and Thank you for listening. The Alamo City Ultra is in the books! Thank you Rob Goyen and the Trails over Texas Ultra company for putting on a great 50 K ultra.
What business does a 59 yr old physician from Florida have running in the woods in Texas? What could possibly be gained from rocks, roots, heat, and railroad ties? Can you even eat plant based and run?
Can you run your way to health? If so, how long does it last? Can you achieve ultra fitness then glide into the sunset without exercising any more?
I did not realize I was born to run until I was 40. I have never been called light on my feet or nimble. But I do love a challenge and the chance to improve myself along my life's journey.
I hope you enjoy my running tails with a little health thrown in for good measure. Thank you for listening!

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 318: Food Matters
Friday Sep 03, 2021
Friday Sep 03, 2021
Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
I think most people listening to this podcast believe that plant based nutrition can prevent and reverse lifestyle diseases. But what about infectious diseases? Do we fight infectious diseases or not let them get a hold in the first place? Is sterilizing the environment with chemicals and prophylaxis with vaccines the answer? Or should the focus be more directed on the health of the individual?
We definitely have food deserts in the USA where cheap processed foods are cheaper and more assessable than fresh fruits and vegetables. But there is also a choice in a lot of instances that requires a little more personal effort.
Today, I compare a grocery cart of $150.00 worth of fresh vs processed foods to feed a family of 4 for the week. You may be surprised with the amount of whole organic foods I was able to put in a cart for that price. While children can survive on calories, in order to thrive they need fresh fruits and vegetables with minimal chemical contamination.
Study after study shows low fat, high fiber, and high nutrient content to be associated with less disease. Yet, we turn to processed foods and supplements for our health.
Most people would agree that health is number one when it comes to things most valuable. Nutrition is the number one ingredient for health yet we delegate it to fast food companies, and large chemical corporations that make processed foods in boxes that promise nutrition.

Welcome! and thank you for listening.
Today I am joined by Katy Bowman. Bestselling author, speaker, and a leader in the Movement movement, bio mechanist Katy Bowman is changing the way we move and think about our need for movement. Her nine books, including the groundbreaking “Move Your DNA” and “Movement Matters”, have been translated into more than a dozen languages worldwide. Bowman teaches movement globally and speaks about sedentarism and movement ecology to academic and scientific audiences. Her work has been featured in diverse media such as the Today Show, CBC Radio One, the Seattle Times, and Good Housekeeping. One of Maria Shriver’s “Architects of Change” and America Walks “Woman of the Walking Movement,” she has worked with companies like Patagonia, Nike, and Google as well as a wide range of non-profits and other communities, sharing her “move more, move more body parts, move more for what you need” message. Her movement education company, Nutritious Movement, is based in Washington State, where she lives with her family. Learn more at nutritiousmovement.com.
One of my favorite things to do is observe people in the grocery store or airport. How do their hips move? Is their head way out in front of their body? Are they looking down? Falling forward? I am victim to my own scrutiny as well. What is my posture at the end of a marathon or triathlon? How to do I stand when giving a talk or at the counter preparing a meal? What hurts or is stiff? Can I do movements that I did as a younger person. How do I move my body throughout my day or on the weekends doing gardening or yardwork?
Are these changes a reflection of aging muscles or even deeper changes within our own cellular structure. How might we affect aging by becoming more mobile?
Katy and I discuss these things and more. She is a wealth of knowledge and ideas that I believe can help you and your family. Enjoy the interview. Links to her website, podcast, and books are listed below.

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
How do we affect positive change in a world that is so divided? I believe it starts at home. Living in harmony in our personal environments then translates to harmony extended into the world around us. We cannot depend on others to affect positive change if we make no efforts ourselves. We are over a year into a pandemic with little direction on how to make ourselves healthier from the medical community other than vaccinate.
We live a fast paced, hack driven, drive through, quick fix, world, centered on the get it now with the least amount of effort. Our food and water sources have been contaminated with the chemicals needed for quick mass production of mono-crops geared at convenience foods. Our society has become obese and at the same time nutrient deficient. We have attempted to sanitize and destroy our micro-environments both in nature and our individual bodies to the point that we are no longer in balance with the trillions of micro species that we share the planet with.
The response to these failed attempts at living in harmony with nature has been a war on nature that we will not win.
This podcast is about positive change. This podcast is not repeating the errors of history. This podcast is how to start in your own microenvironment and make positive changes for your health and those around you and those to come in the future.
I hope you will gain peace and purpose from this podcast and eliminate fear that has no place in a healthy environment.
Thank you for listening.

Welcome! and Thank you for listening.
Today I am joined by Addie Dulaney Majnaric, RDN to discuss some nutrition pet peeves as well as some travel tips for eating healthy.
One of the biggest things we can do for our family is to maximize health through nutrition. While it is true, children can survive on adequate calories, proper growth, brain development, and immune function rely on nutrient dense foods.
Many people think sodium is not an issue for children, but they are at risk for hypertension and inflammation with excessive sodium intake. A recent study published in JAMA sited that children get upwards of 2/3 of their calories from ultra processed foods. These are foods high in sugar, salt and oil as well as stabilizers and preservatives that can be highly allergenic. Nearly all soybean oil that is used in processed food comes from genetically modified soybeans. Organic ingredients is exceedingly rare in take out or drive through foods. This translates into high levels of glyphosates and other pesticide exposure.
We will discuss this and much more in this episode.

Welcome! and Thank you for listening!
Are you on nutrition autopilot? Do you skip breakfast or grab a smoothie then graze your way into lunch? Is your desk drawer at work filled with snacks that don't count in your nutrition log? Have you planned dinner, or will you just grab something on the way home? We are faced with thousands of decisions each day in addition to our food choices. Unlike the Hadza hunter-gather tribe our nutrition can take a back burner in our daily activities, because there are so many choices. However, those choices added to the thousand other choices often lead to quick last minute mindless choices. Energy overload.
Overweight and overwhelmed can make one fell the need to make drastic changes. What follows today is a discussion on medical decision making when it comes to obesity. Get all of the facts before making irreversible choices.
Exercise is a must for health but perhaps not for the reasons you think.
I hope you enjoy my discussion on bariatric surgery, plant based nutrition and exercise.

Welcome! snd Thank you for listening!
I am sure you have heard it takes so many minutes of exercising to burn off a donut? Some people say thy have a slow metabolism and cannot loose weight on any diet. Some people say you need to eat to loose weight because you need to stoke your metabolism.
According to Herman Pontzer, Phd and his new book Burn, this is not the case. I have lived the exercise point. Training for a marathon does not result necessarily in weight loss. I have also seen people fast and loose considerable weight. The bottom line is loosing weight is a negative energy balance and gaining is a positive energy balance. But what about the quality of nutrients. Is a donut equal to kale?
I found Dr. Pontzer's book,
very supportive of a plant based diet. Yes energy is energy, but for optimum health we need to find a way to achieve a balance in nutrients and fulfillment. I hope you enjoy my discussion.
