Welcome and thank you for listening. Lance Armstrong had one of the highest V02 max readings at 84. Killian Jornet, the world class ultra runner clocks in at an amazing level of 92. In a study published in the Journal of the American Cardiology, August, 2018 investigators in Copenhagan followed 5000 males for 42 years to evaluate the effect of V02 max on longevity. Those with the highest levels at age 50 lived 4.9 years longer than the lowest quartile. We discuss V02 max and what it might mean for those interested in achieving optimal health and fitness.
I shared some struggles that I have encountered over the past week with members transitioning to plant based nutrition. There are many stumbling blocks even when you have the best intentions. It is like learning a new language when words have more than one meaning causing you to say something totally different than you had intended.
Weight loss plans are often mistaken as a means to health which cound not be further from the truth. Most of these plan focus on portion control. I received an invitation to an ice cream social that the hospital is sponsoring to celebrate their bariatric surgery program. The belief is that if you control your portions even with radical surgery you still can eat unhealthful foods. I received another invitation to a BBQ pig roast for doctor appreciation for the hospital. They would not have that menu it they did not think the majority of doctors would find it appealing and enjoy the "occassional" overindulgence. By supporting such events we are acknowledging our disconnect with food and health. If your doctor does not take care of his or her own health, how will they ever take care of yours?
We have had the most success in reversing lifestyle diseases through our nutrition education programs. Members have three classes to choose from weekly that review the why and how with regards to plant based nutrition. We have a members only website that has cooking demonstrations and lectures that can be accessed if they cannot attend class. Working together as a team with a physician and a registered dietitian provides the support needed to make achieving health and wellness a success. Welcome, and thank you for listening. My Grandmother used to say, "If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride". Can you hear the Irish self determination in that? My Italian Grandmother would say, "If everyone hung their dirty laundry out, you would want to bring your own back in". These were two of the most self sufficient determined women I have every met. There lives were anything but easy and they are largely why I became a physician so that others would not have their lives cut short by lifestyle diseases. Could I have convinced them to change to a plant based lifestyle? I am sure that I could have and I sure wish that I had the chance.
But I am happy to be able to light a fire under you to change your nutrition so that you can avoid or reverse lifestyle diseases. There is nothing in eggs or cheese burgers worth dying for. And if that is all that makes you happy right now then you need to start the journey to look elsewhere. I would venture to say that it is not too far away. Friends don't let friends drive drunk but they certainly help you to eat poorly. It takes great courage for someone to say, hey, let's not eat that greasy, salty food today. Let me treat you to a plant based dish that I enjoy.
If you are stuck, pick your self up and take the first step. Eat a healthy breakfast, try some greens for lunch and take a five minute walk. Tomorrow, repeat and add a little more. You will feel better. We would love to help you on your journey to health and wellness. Having a positive mental attitude is everything. Check out the website at doctordulaney.com to let us help you get back on offense. Email me at jami@doctordulaney.com and follow me on Instagram and Facebook @jaimeladulaney.

Welcome and thank you for listening. I am joined in this episode by Addie Dulaney Majnaric to discuss our trip to Washington, D.C. to attend the International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine. It was great traveling with Addie not only as my daughter but representing our practice as the only mother-daughter, MD-RDN team practicing plant based nutrition as medicine. It was great to hear reviews of the literature on the role of plant based nutrition as well as to hear new and exciting research.
The first speaker was Dean Ornish, MD who could be considered the first person to document with real images of the vasculature a reversal of disease. His program incorporates movement, stress reduction, social connectedness and plant based nutrition to not only reverse cardiovascular disease but prostate cancer.
We heard about the cellular mechanisms that plant based nutrition has to reverse diabetes and decrease Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Saray Stancic gave a wonderful presentation on the treatment of multiple sclerosis with plant based nutrition and the association of cardiovascular risk factors with the development of multiple sclerosis.
Eating poorly not only causes the development of vascular disease but strongly influences DNA damage leading to cancers and acceleration of the immune response that causes autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and arthritis.
There were over a 1000 health care providers there to soak up this information and much more. The message is clear. In order to prevent and reverse lifestyle diseases, we must adopt and educate our patients on plant based nutrition.
Addie and I were very excited to have a practice in place that is doing just that. We have three nutrition classes available to our patients each week that teaches the science behind plant based nutrition and how to implement plant based cooking into ones life. It is a social environment of encouragement, and we are there personally to guide people in their journey. To lear more about our practice visit doctordulaney.com. Please email us at addie@doctordulaney.com or jami@doctordulaney.com with questions. We would love to hear from you and help you to get your plant based journey to health started.

Welcome and thank you for listening. Are your legs strong? Do nutritional cheat days really matter? Today my guest Drs Ayesha and Dean Sherzai discuss these things and more. They call themselves TeamSherzai because they are co directors of the Alzheimer's Prevention Program at Loma Linda University. After being frustrated with the traditional pharmacologic model of treating dementia, they discovered the best treatment and prevention was founded on nutrition and healthy living. They coauthored a book called The Alzheimer's Solution that discusses the pillars of dementia prevention that include nutrition, exercise, mindfulness and sleep. We discuss such myths as cheat days, intermittent fasting followed by a poor diet as well as much more.
Our brains require a great deal of energy to function daily. This means that blood flow to the brain is extremely important. Limiting that flow by a systemic blood pressure that is too low, and disease of the arteries feeding the brain can result in cognitive decline. One way to ensure good nutrient supply to the brain is to exercise daily and build strong legs. Having strong muscular legs will generate the blood flow needed to perfuse the brain as well as growth factors to promote neuron or brain cell growth and maintenance. Team Sherzai are believers in good habit development with regards to exercise and nutrition. It is also important to get these good exercise and nutrition habits developed at a young age in order to prevent decline that can begin in your twenties. Remember, if we are not growing we are declining.
Check out their website at Teamsherzai.com and their book The Alzheimer's Solution for a reference on the prevention of dementia. Please visit my website at doctordulaney.com to find out how our practice is aimed at reversing lifestyle diseases through plant based nutrition and exercise. Welcome and thank you for listening. Americans eat out an average of 18.2 meals each month with city dwellers in Houston, Texas leading the pack. The reported average cost per person ranges from $36.40 to$46.14 per meal. That is a lot of cabbage. It is also a lot of highly salted, fatty foods that lead to lifestyle diseases. It is very hard to make good choices without being mindful, and a lot of people decide up front that eating out with friends is fair game for dietary indiscretion. However, if we continue to eat poorly when we go out then there will never be good options available because restaurants are going to make what sells. Sure, it is painful at first to have special requests for the chef when dinning out. But if you support the restaurant on a frequent basis and give them raving Yelp reviews, the restaurant will take note. They are in business to make money and will provide what is in demand. Remember, most chefs were trained with butter and salt as bandaids to make things palatable quickly.
We discuss this dilemma as well as others in this episode. I hope they are thought provoking and offer some potential solutions. Choosing to nutrition as a means to get healthy is a process and can be very confusing. I am passionate about supporting people in this journey as opposed to continue the traditional practice of repair things when they break medicine. Most people consider their health as one of the most important focuses in their lives but often do not connect the role of what they are eating to that outcome. Welcome and thank you for listening. Life expectancy numbers have recently shown the US at number 27, below smaller countries such as Croatia and South Korea despite the billions of dollars we put into "healthcare". To no surprise to my listeners, it has been attributed to our poor diet with 80% of Americans not getting the RDA for fruits and vegetables. As I was driving to swim practice, I noticed the line at McDonalds that circled the building at 6am. Those folks are starting their day behind in nutrients and ahead on toxin production that their body has to take on from the very start of their day. I was glad to hear my nutrition class report the fruits they had eaten for a day when we went around the room. Everyone ate at least 5 servings. My hope is to even increase that number along with the nutrient density of their vegetable choices each meal.
If we are not focused on change to improve our health, we will certainly be declining. We often leave our health for the broken healthcare system to fix. We follow the leads of our trusted physicians who are often not questioning their practice of medicine and how they might change it to make things better. In this episode I discuss an example of an unfortunate outcome of a patient following the lead of the healthcare system. It is not that they meant harm but the protocols moved so fast, and there was such a lack of communication, she became lost in a sea of treatment modalities that seemed to just be causing her more problems. This is certainly not the case most of the time, but patients deserve to be heard and educated and given the opportunity to ask questions and make their own decisions.
The most important thing a person can do to assure their health is to eat a whole foods plant based diet. That is a big change for a lot of people and can be very frustrating and confusing. I hope you find this podcast helpful in your journey to become the healthiest person you can be. Welcome and thank you for listening. Eating healthy is hard. There are temptations everywhere you look. Even the gas station is serving "food". The reality is that they entice people to come in where they are greeted by sugary drinks and greasy food. Even at the pump the videos blare of all the treats inside. As I was pumping gas the other day, the pump was covered with advertisements about the smoothies available inside. Smoothie? They are healthy correct? They are not treats. They are sugar bombs that addict you and your children to simple sugars.
blareI am joined by Addie Majnaric, RDN for a short rant: What the Fork? about this and a few other things I am sure you will enjoy. Even Vinnie the cat was amazed.
I also present an exciting new study about atrial fibrillation and weight loss. We love helping people use food as medicine and are so excited for our patients that become medication free and full of energy.
I also talk about lectins, the new buzz word to sell books and make you feel good about not eating your vegetables. Spoiler alert, I am sticking to fruits and vegetables to fuel my Ironman training and racing.
I hope you enjoy the episode and as always email me at jami@doctordulaney.com and please visit the website at doctordulaney.com to read my weekly blogpost and get new recipes and ideas to keep you healthy. Welcome and thank you for listening. Today I have a special guest, Jeff Chilton. He is the president of Nammex, nammex.com, a company that supplies certified mushroom extracts to the US supplement industry. He has been a leader in the field of mushroom science beginning in the late sixties and worked on a mushroom farm as early as 1973. He was involved in the cultivation and development of the shiitake, oyster and enoki mushroom sales beginning in 1978. His experience took him to China during the 1990s where he introduced the standardization of organic mushroom farming. The medicinal portion of the mushroom lies in the percentage of beta glucans. Jeff has been involved extensively in the chemical testing of the amount of beta glucans in extracts as well as DNA testing to determining the authenticity of the extracts.
During this episode we discuss all things mushrooms including their life cycle, when organic varieties are best and what makes a mushroom a must for people wishing to achieve optimal health and wellness.
Jeff and I both eat mushrooms several times a week. He believes that shiitake is one of the most health promoting grocery store mushroom varieties you can purchase on a regular basis. 85% of medicinal mushroom extracts come from organic farms in China making them a leader in organic mushroom farming. We would encourage you to try different varieties of mushrooms available in your local grocery store or asian markets. King Oyster mushrooms are one of my favorites and are known to have little chemical exposure even if not organic.
Be aware that foraging for wild mushrooms takes an education. Take time to learn from a reliable guide before sampling wild mushrooms. The wrong variety could lead to fatal liver failure so get educated. Jim suggests learning one or two local varieties well before venturing out on your own.
Check out Jim's website at nammex.com as well as realmushrooms.com if you would like to try some quality tested extracts. Feel free to email me at jami@doctordulaney.com and visit the website at doctordulaney.com to see what is happening with our practice focused on food and movement as medicine. Thank you for listening.

Welcome and thank you for listening. I remember taking a Flintstone vitamin as a kid. I liked the cherry ones, and I cannot be certain what happened to the purple ones. I also took a vitamin when I started running for no reason other than I was becoming more healthy. It seemed like the right thing to do. I switched to a mail a way vitamin when I met an really fit elderly gentleman running and he said that he took them. In a study reviewing the published data on vitamins in the Journal of the the American College of Cardiology looking at the CVD prevention and Treatment (volume 71, issue 22, June 2018) they found that multivitamins along with vitamin C, D, calcium, selenium showed no effect on preventing CVD. In fact niacin actually made things worse. Only folic acid had some protection against strokes and folate is abundant in a plant based diet so no worries there. We discuss this and a study from the JAMA Psychiatry published June 27, 2018 showing the benefits of exercise on Cardiovascular death and depression.
Sometimes we are afraid to start a new exercise or challenge our bodies. We fall into the mode of needing a rest day or protecting ourselves from potential injury from exercise to the point that we don't actually gain the benefits that we might potentially gain. We saw this in our membership with a squat challenge. People were afraid to start or push themselves because they have been told or believe that they will further damage their bodies. For those who made the leap and did the challenge, they felt empowered by their abilities and their gains in strength over the month. This is exactly what make our practice so unique. By sharing experiences, others in the practice become motivated to try new things and together the group grows healthier.
If you would like to be a part of a positive, motivating group of people dedicated to living as healthy as possible, check out our website at doctordulaney.com . Email me at jami@doctordulaney.com with questions call the office for a free consult to discuss how our practice might help you to reverse lifestyle diseases.
Happy July 4th and God Bless America.

We all want more but at what cost. There are a lot of attachments to more. With more SAD food comes more disease. However, with a more plant based diet comes more health. They go together and cannot be separated. If you drive on the wrong side of the road there is a good chance you will get in an accident. Not always but eventually your luck will run out. That is were the conflict lies. We really really don't want to compromise, ever. We all eventually do. So would it not be better to choose more health? The compromise would be you have to learn to cook colorful, tasty, beautiful food that is also health promoting. You get more than you give hands down.
People start most diets knowing full well that is it temporary and they can hopefully fix their problem and go back to the same old way of eating and hopefully it will last for a while before the problem finds them again. The faulty logic is that the quick fix diet changes the surface only. The car looks clean but the frame and engine are still in disrepair.
Nothing is as good as the original equipment when it comes to the body and to food. If you process that bean or potato into a chip or pill it will never be as good as the whole food. If you have to have parts removed or replaced, your body will never function as good as it did before.
Holding on to oil, or animal flesh or processed animal fluids is not the way to health, and is quite frankly, a high price to pay for life itself.
Eat fruits and vegetables as close to their original form as possible. Get a minimum of 60 minutes of exercise each day. Maintain a positive outlook and smile. You will gain more health from those things than virtually any prescription out there.
