Welcome and thanks for listening. How do we measure success when it comes to wellness or in becoming plant based. Is it a few more vegetables or a loss of weight? Perhaps a better HgA1C measuring glucose control. The excitement that plant based nutrition can help to reverse lifestyle diseases is often dampened by the difficulty in making a change. After all, only 6 % of the US population is vegan, so there are a lot of stumbling blocks as marketing efforts are not geared toward your newly adopted lifestyle. So how can we keep from being derailed and falling into our previous eating habits?
In this episode Addie and I help you to focus on your successes. Think of the ultimate reward of optimal health and wellness but focus on the smaller goals along the way and celebrate your successes along the way. Each medicine that we wean people off of is a huge milestone that was often not thought possible a few months earlier. But blood glucose values do not return to normal in a steady progression but decline more on a wave like curve. Each day the insulin levels go down there is a decrease in total body inflammatory markers. This results in more energy and less joint discomfort and better blood flow to all parts of the body. Celebrate your success by journaling or sticky notes on the fridge. Fill a jar with little hand written notes of your triumphs no matter the size. Take them out and read them when you feel your progress is slowing. We are happy to be a part of your health journey and look forward to hearing from you. Welcome and thank you for listening. This podcast may be more for me than you. It is a podcast down memory lane with regards to the practice of medicine. When I went to medical school it was about the practice of medicine not the delivery of healthcare. The patient was the sole focus. How to rid them of disease or fix what was broken. Now it is about economies of scale and numbers to treat with regard to cost effectiveness. It is about seeing 40,50,70 patients a day with little time spent at the bedside and most of the time in front of a computer screen. The results are not better for anyone involved; at least not for the patient or the doctor. I stumbled upon Dr. Victoria Sweet's book, God's Hotel looking at a Direct Primary Care Site. God's Hotel was Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco, California. A 1200 bed hosptial that cared for the city's poor in large 37 bed wards. Where doctors had time to spend with their patients and participate in their healing and their lives. It was isolated from the healthcare system of policies and procedures, patient disposition rounds, electronic medical records, and the 3rd party payer system and rules. Dr. Sweet spent 25 years there practicing medicine while she earned her PhD in the History of Medicine. Her experience there lead to her publishing the book, God's Hotel and subsequently, Slow Medicine, The Way to Healing. LaGuna Honda Hospital could not remain hidden forever. Healthcare arrived and the hospital was rebuit along with the new ways of healthcare. We talk about medicine and healthcare. The physical examination and connection with our patients, the need to bring human kindness and compassion back into medicine and much more.
I would like to thank her personally for the reassurance of my own path to take back the practice of medicine through a Direct Primary Care Model. It is the path less traveled to limit the number of patients I see so that each patient is cared for in all aspects of disease and health. Choosing to teach plant based nutrition to my patients as a way of reversing lifestyle diseases instead tempory treatments with medications and invasive procedures has revitalized my practice of medicine. There is nothing more important than our health. If you have any questions please email me at jami@doctordulaney.com and please visit the website at doctordulaney.com. You can learn more about Dr. Sweet at @GodsHotel on Facebook. Check out her TEDxMiddlebury talk on youtube.com, The efficiency of inefficiency.
Thank you for listening.

Welcome and Happy New Year. This is the 9th episode with Timaree Hagenburger in our Excusitarian series. No time to eat well. Our time and our health are two of our most important commodities and they both are very much intertwined. If we do not take the time to eat well, we will not be healthy and our time for disease free happiness will be limited. During this episode we talk about time, convenience, and perceived cost of eating plant-based. It may seem like it takes more time to prepare plant-based food at home, but in reality, it doe not compared to driving to a restaruant, parking, ordering, waiting, and driving home. Even going to the window for fast food requires effort and the expense is on average $8.00 vs those enticing value deals. These foods leave you wanting more because they do not satisfy the nutrients your body desires and you continue to pick at junk foods trying to get satisfied. This way also leads to weight gain, feeling poorly, and looking for supplements to help with feeling better and loosing weight. Presciption and over the counter medication cost for indigestion from eating oily and high fat prepared foods must be added into the cost equation. How about that extra BP or water pill needed because of the extra salt in take out or restaruant foods?
You can actually save time by making meatless meals at home. Vegetables take less time to cook and also carry less risk of bacterial contaminaton and spoiling. Clean-up is also quicker without the grease and oils that get stuck to the pan with eating animal products and using cooking oils. We will discuss tips to make being prepared and for avoiding those mindless moments when you grab something that you regret.

Welcome and thank you for your support as 2017 comes to a close. I look forward to many exciting guests and topics to discuss in 2018. This episode is near and dear to my heart. The story of Walking with Peety is a story about recovering health and happiness largely because of the love of a companion dog. Eric thought he was getting a dog at the shelter so that he would be forced to walk twice a day which would help him get back in shape as he adopted a plant based diet. In reality Peety adopted Eric and showed him unconditional love and dedication. He introduced him to a world that Eric thought wanted nothing to do with an overweight lonely man. Together they grew into lean, healthy, outgoing companions. Eric is now paying it forward by promoting a healthy plant based lifesytle along with the rewards of adopting a shelter animal. It is a book about kindness and hope. I believe everything always works out for a reason. Walking with Peety certainly supports this notion. Check out their website at EricandPeety.com. He is on facebook as well. Also check out the video, Eric and Peety, a Mutual Rescue on YouTube.
I hope this book inspires you to continue on your journey to achieve optimal health and wellness in the new year. Welcome and thank you for listening. It is the most wonderful time of the year. And it can be the most stressful time of the year. As a cardiologist, I often see more patients because of the food choices that they make. High fat, sugar and salty foods are all around and presented as an award for having made it though another year. Health can be ignored until January 1 when we promise to focus on new resolutions. But plant based nutrition does not have to be all fire and brimstone. I would like to help you navigate the seas of fat and salt and have you experience joy and satisfaction with healthy choices and alternatives that allows you to enjoy the holidays fully. Think of preparing a colorful table with a variety of vegetables, fruits, spices and herbs that is pleasing to the eyes and the palate. Most traditional appetizers can be made plant based such as a spinach and artichoke dip, stuffed mushrooms, or vegan sushi. Get your antioxidants with a cranberry salad with walnuts and oranges or caramelized apples. Baked pears with a cinnamon glaze and raspberries can make the table look amazing. Get help from the family making a holiday vegetable snowman or wreath. Make a hummus tasting talbe with a varety of different flavors such as black bean, chickpea, or red peppers. Add a topping station to allow guests to creat their own flavor additions with colorful peppers and olives.
But remember to get your exercise in as well. Nothing better to handle the stress of the holidays than a good run, swim or bike ride. The choice is yours but keep all your parts mobile. We discuss these things and much more during the episode.
And perhaps the most exciting news is ticket are on sale for the 3rd Annual Charlotte County Plant Based Nutrition Conference being held at Twin Isle CC, March 24, 2018. Get your tickets now at Eventbrite.com. We are also ofering private health and nutrition consultations on March 23, with myself, Timaree Hagenburger, RD and Addie Dulaney-Majnaric,RD as well as two Yoga classes so check out the website. Welcome and thanks for listening. Gluten is the new villain on the nutrition scene or so it seems. Many people don't even know what it is but they are sure they need to avoid it. Actually, it is a mixture of complex proteins;glutenins and gliadins that are not completely digestable in some individuals. Celiac disease is diagnosed in people with the genotype HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 along with flattening of intestinal villi leading to malabsorption and many other inflamatory mediated symptoms such as headaches, joint pain, abdominal pain and bloating amd many more. Even though 40% of the population can have the genotype only about 2% of those develop the disease. Gluten sensitivity has no known associated biomarkers or intestinal changes but can result in many of the same symptoms. Gluten is found in wheat, barly and rye and people with celiac need to avoid these grains as well as processed foods that may have been processed in a gluten containing facility. Another similar diagnosis is a wheat allergy or sensitivity which is usually a more allergic type reaction of hives, rash, or even throat swelling. Addie and I discuss how one can go about making the diagnosis and how to avoid gluten if necessary. Remember, however, gluten is not harmful in people without gluten sensitivity or Celiac and has been associated with improved gut mibrobiota as well as decreased vascular disease.
We woud love to help you sore these symptoms as well as other conditions related to nutrition. Please check out the website at doctordulaney.com or email us at jami@doctordulaney.com or addie@doctordulaney.com. Follow us on Instagram @jaimeladulaney and @mini_maj_clan. Thank you for listening.

Happy Thanksgiving. Thank you for listening. Thanksgiving is the beginning of the holiday season that despite all of the happy times with friends and family can also be very stressful. It can also be the undoing of a lot of health gains made in the preceding months. I would like to offer some tips to enjoy great meals without the artery clogging side effects of traditional holiday meals. Take for instance the green bean casserole made famous by the Campbell's soup people. Instead of the soup, substitute a mushroom sauce or gravy over fresh mushrooms. Make your own stuffing with sprouted bread, celery, leeks and vegetable broth. Doing these things can save many grams of sodium. This can drive up blood pressure. Add the excessive oil and vascular constriction can lead There is a 33% increase in heart attacks from Thanksgiving until the end of the year. This does not need to happen.
The new guidelines for hypertension make a BP greater than 130/80mmHG the definition of hypertension. This increases the number of people with the diagnosis much greater with a substantial proportion of the newly diagnosed under age 45. The recommendation is to treat these newly diagnosed with lifestyle modifications. However, just recommending that people eat healthier and exercise is unlikely going to result in a substantial change in behavior.
I hope you find your why for choosing plant based nutrition. I hope that I can be some assistance in helping you to make the transition and continue on your journey to achieve your optimal health and fitness. Check out my website at doctordulaney.com or email me at jami@doctordulaney.com.

Welcome and thank you for listening. Today I feature Ken Botts. He is the food service and sustainable food system strategist of the US Humane Society. His tag line is appropriately making the world a better place one plate at a time. He realized eating predominately plant based helped him perform better in his sport of Judo at an early age. He entered a career in food service at the University of North Texas and with his dedication to service listened to the students and developed one of the countries first vegan dinning halls. It grew within the University becoming one of the most popular dining halls on campus to being the model for many other Universities including Harvard. Ken joined the Humane Society of the United States to partner with Universities as well as other large institutions to provide a vegan dinning experience. Helping people and helping animals is what Ken is all about. Enjoy listening to the delightful gentleman spread his positive insights into the future of dinning. You can follow Ken on Twitter @KenBotts. Check out the Food Forward Events the Humane Society is sponsoring as well as other educational opportunities.

"Never let your fear decide your future". Although this quote is taken out of context from the Cinderella movie, it offers some good medical advice. This is especially true when it comes to our genes. We all have them and they all get confused at times and make the wrong proteins which can cause the wrong cells to start to grow and get out of control. However, we are not just along for the ride. We have control through our actions on what genes get turned on and how far things get out of control. The main action we do daily is eat. Our nutrition plays a much greater role in our health that our genes. The ratio is probably closer to 80-90% exposure and 10-20% genetic predisposition. We can turn genes on and off by eating foods that harm us or help us. November is prostate cancer month and Alzheimers awareness month. Both have a genetic component and both are strongly influenced by what we eat. Dr. Dean Ornish did a study looking at prostate cell growth when tumor cells were exposed to the blood of patients on a whole foods plant based diet. The tumor cells not only shrunk but 453 genes were turned off that were associated with prostate cancer. A similar situation exists with the gene for Alzheimer's risk, ApoE4. If you possess 2 of the ApoE4 genes your risk of Alzheimer's is 9 times that of the general population in the United States. However, native Algerians often have 2 genes and a very low incidence of Alzheimer's. They eat a mainly plant based and very high fiber diet thus not giving the ApoE4 cholesterol carrying gene a chance to work. Timaree and I discuss these things and how your everyday choices affect your genetic outcome. So let your nutritional choices make your future something to look forward to instead of fear.

Welcome and thank you for listening. October is breast cancer awareness month. Much of the attention is focused on detection and a hope for a cure. This podcast is about prevention and empowerment. Addie Dulaney-Majnaric joins me today as we discuss ways to prevent breast cancer and the hope and power every women deserves. Women have been a victim to barbaric surgeries and treatments that have not resulted in longer lives but longer lives knowing they have cancer. Wearing pink and hoping for a rescue is not the answer. However, eating a nutrient dense plant- based diet and exercising will help significantly to decrease the risk of developing cancer and preventing a recurrence.
In today's podcast we discuss the role of dairy fueling DNA damage, promoting cancer and it's role in promoting growth of the tumors though the casein protein and high estrogen levels associated in drinking a fluid full of growth hormones. Eliminating dairy is just the beginning. We can eat a colorful plant based diet rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients that will hep to decrease angiogenesis in tumors and stop the grow of tumors. Add mushrooms, and berries of all varieties to your diet daily. Those same nitric oxide producing cruciferous vegetables like broccoli also decrease abnormal blood vessel growth. As the mothers and matriarchs in our families, we need to set the example for healthy eating to prevent disease and set our children on the path to nutrient dense disease fighting nutrition for a healthier generation tomorrow.
