Sometimes good people just need to be reminded of their mission. Most physicians set out to help people become healthy. To heal them from disease. Somewhere along traditional medicine we started to believe that there were only two ways. Mediince and surgery. One or the other. And we as physician join one of those teams when we enter residency. Medicine route or surgical route. And then we can subspecialize even further. We have become good at diagnosing disease but not so good at preventing the diseae or curing the chronic diseases. We have become satisfied in slowing the course. "Let food be thy medicine" was uttered long ago by Hippocrates. Now some of us are excited to use food as medicine to heal and prevent chronic lifestyle diseases. Susan Benigas has taken the mission upon herself to spread the word of Hippocrates to physicians so that we can begin to heal people as we originally sought out to do. Listen as she talks of the progress that is being made to get the medical community on board to take back the practice of medicine to mean prevent and reverse chronic lifestyle diseases. This episode is a review of the cookbook, Dining at the Ravens and of my chat with the authors, Jeff and Joan Standford. Unfortunately, a technical error occurred and I lost the audio. I was heart broken because Jeff and Joan took an hour of their busy day to speak with me and it was a wonderful chat. They are ethical vegans that have not compromised their ethics running The Standford Inn with the associated Ravens restaurant on their property. They purchased The Standford Inn in 1985 and remodeled and designed what is now a fabulous resort and restaurant. Instead of landscaping they created an organic garden landscape like the Chinese Gardens growing vegetables organically for the restaurant. They began vegetarian and then became a vegan restaurant first serving only breakfast and then moved on to dinner. Most of their patrons are not expecting a whole foods plant based dinning experience but are amazed at the beauty and quality of the elegantly displayed meals. Dining at the Ravens in their second cookbook featuring many of the recipes created by Jeff. They have added excerpts on how to make the dishes without oil and have tried to make most of the recipes without processed ingredients. The book is wonderful. Check out their website at Standford Inn.com Also email me a jamidulaney@gmail.com with questions. Check out my website at doctordulaney.com

I took on the challenge of a 3 day water fast this week after my Napa Valley Marathon. What a great way to recover. I wanted to see what it was like to go multiple days fasting on nothing but water. I lived and it was not too bad. Food really looks and tastes good now. It was sort of like a marathon. At mile 15 you start to experience some discomfort and the last 6 miles can be very uncomfortable but tolerable. The last of of the fast was particularly challenging when I interviewed Timaree Hagenburger, MPH, RD. She is a professor of nutrition as well as the auther of the new book called The Foodie Bar Way. It is unique in that it is laid out in sections giving choices like at a salad bar with the ability to "raise the bar" and make them even more nutrient dense. She writes about oatmeal bars, mediterranean fajita bars, pizza bars, and loaded potato bars to name a few. The photography is amazing and all of the dishes are oil free and nutrient dense. It gives guidelines for the recipes or allow for improverization to meet your own tastes and needs. Check her and her book out at www. The NutritionProfessor.com, www.FoodieBars.com and on Twitter @The NutriProf. Please contact me with questions at jamidulaney@gmail or doctordulaney.com.

This episode is a part of my conversation with my cousin, Fred. We have approached the age that our grandparents passed of heart disease and diabetes. Luckily, our genetics only contribute about 10% to our developement of the lifestyle diseases that took our grandparents at such an early age. I became a physician largely because of witnessing the suffering those diseases caused to my family. So it is only fitting that as a physician I would like to help the rest of my family avoid those diseases and outcomes. It is easy to fall into the trap when surrounded by disease that you will ultimately develop those diseases as well. Fred is a motorcross athlete, business man, father, husband, and ordained minister. He spends a great deal of time helping others and is a role model for them. Listen to my version of our conversation about reversing diabetes and decreasing the risk of cardiovasular disease through a whole foods no added oil plant based diet. I hope this encourages him on his journey to health as well as families everywhere. Because you do not have to follow the path of your genes to lifesyle diseases of heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, high cholesterol and dementia.

It is never too early or too late to experience the health benefits of a whole foods plant based diet. You could be 26 and overweight like the Chocolate Vegan, Phillip Henderson or maybe 3 or 7 like his sons learning to eat fruit and vegetables at an early age. Or perhaps 89 with blockages of the carotid arteries and hypertension. Maybe you have had lung cancer and prostate cancer and are looking to keep the disease from progressing or even keep the chest pain from coronary artery disease from becoming unstable. Maybe you are significantly overweight as are your children and you would like to set an example for them and take control of your health. These are real people that are accepting the challenge to change their health through a whole foods plant based way of life.
