I would like to take time to highlight some of the topics covered in the First Annual Charlotte County Plant Based Nutrition Conference. It was a great day in Punta Gorda with over 140 guests to hear Dr. Esselstyn speak as well as his wife Ann. Dustin Rudolph, PharmD spoke on reversing diabetes with a plant based diet. I spoke on the difficulties of transitioning and Evelisse Capo PharmD did a cooking demonstration. The yacht club provided a beautiful setting and our plant based chef Keith from Trabue made a fantastic whole foods no added oil plant based breakfast and lunch. The day progressed flawlessly and all seemed to enjoy and leave smiling. I hope many more can join us next year.

Welcome. This episode features the co author of Younger Next Year, Chris Crowley. He is a lawyer that discovered life could get even better next year with exercise and a healthy diet. He took what he learned from his inital visit with his doctor, Henry Lodge, M.D. and together they researched and presented the reasons we need to exercise six days a week until we die. That is if we want to live until we die versus continue to decline until we die. Not only do we need to exercise but we need to have good nutrition i.e. whole foods plant based and also commitment. We function best in packs so having isolation is not good. We need to have a purpose and people we care about until we die. We need to move our bodies and expand our lungs in order to keep this wonderful body functioning well. It is possible to be better day after day no matter what age. Sure there will be good and bad days but the slope should stay level or increase instead of decline. Listen and enjoy. Check out the website youngernextyear.com and the books: Younger Next Year and Younger Next Year Exercise Program.

Dr. Michael Gregor is the founder of the non profit website, Nutritionfacts.org where he reviews all of the scientific literature on nutrition and presents weekly videos as well as a biweekly newsletter. If you have not subscribed I would highly recommend it and I do on a daily basis. He has now taken those videos, and added content to publish a book called How Not To Die. This book is divided into 2 parts the first being nutrition as it relates to the most frequent causes of death and the second part describing what foods are the most nutritious in order to live long and well. There are many references and fun facts that he includes along with a description of the science. I hope you enjoy.

Welcome and Happy Holidays!. My memories of the holidays are of my grandmother baking cookies and making candy to give to others and to have at our Christmas gatherings. It was a very special time of the year. She would let me help make the cookies and we would put them in tins upstairs in a cold room to store and admire. I have tried to continue the tradition with my family. Since becomig vegan we have veganized our favorite recipes but they were still full of vegan oils. We are now trying to make them a little more healthy adding nuts for crusts and fruit as sweeteners. We found the Buterflyvegan bakery at the Sacramento farmers market and enjoyed persimmon pie, chocolate pie, rum cake and apple crumble. Parvonah is offering a discount on your first order if you use the code, PBW on the butterflyvegan.com website. I know you will enjoy.

Happy Plant Based Thanksgiving. This is the time of year to give and be greatful. What a better way than introducing friends and family to wonderful, delicious vegetable and fruit dishes. How about a vegan no oil cookie exchange or even yet a vegetable dish card exchange. By bringing and making dishes for others they learn and you get to eat healthy food. Remember it is a journey for everyone but all of us face challenges early on so support each other.

Halloween starts with the candy. Did you buy the kind you like so that you can have what is left? Did you think what might be a little healthier or perhaps vegan? Still a lot of sugar in the stores as you wall in. Now we are approaching Thanksgiving which has grown to become centered around the poor turkey somehow. Have you considered pardoning your own turkey this year? George H. Bush was the first to do so in 1989. How about pumpkin pie? Sarah Josepha Hale made the first set of Thanksgiving recipes in 1863. We will enjoy a tofu/pumpkin pie in a date/nut crust. If you are plant based you can be thankful for taking back control of your own health. Still struggling? Is it like walking across the hot embers in a fire walk? Looking to the end result of good health and great taste can lead you across. Take a covered dish to you family's house if they are not plant based Quietly lead by example this year and perhaps next year they will join you. Send me your favorite Thanksgiving recipe made plant based. I will share it with everyone and perhaps make it myself. Be thankful and compassionate this eating season and you will find much joy and happiness. Email me at Jamidulaney@gmail.com and check out my website at doctordulaney.com

In this episode we talk about the great Marine Corps Marathon and finishing 3 endurance events in 5 weeks. Ready for a little break. The feature interview is with Dr. Thompson who is a distinguished marathon runner and cardiologist. He was my attending way back in the 1990s when I was in training and did not understand why anyone would run a marathon let alone an Ironman. We chat about the risk of atrial fibrillation in endurance athletes. The good the bad and the we are not sure. All in all very encouraging to keep running, swimming and biking. And for sure to keep eating plant based to avoid risk factors for atrial fibrillation such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes. Dr. Thompson is currently the Chief of Cardiology at Hartford Hospital and Director of the Athlete Heart Program and Director of the Cholesterol Management Program. He is the author of over 200 publications and is a frequent contributor to Runner's World Magazine.
