Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 237: Happy Holidays!
Friday Dec 20, 2019
Friday Dec 20, 2019
Welcome! and Thank you for listening. I hope your holidays are happy and plant strong. It isn't easy this time of year. There are many temptations. If you're eating or exercising routines are not well engrained, then it is even easier to give in to temptations. Remember why you decided to become plant based and set yourself up with easy choices like bringing a covered dish to a holiday party or looking at the restaurant menu in advance so that you can commit to a healthy choice before the peer pressure sets in.
I would like to challenge you to give a plant based gift this year. You can make a give such as a soup or fruit basket. Perhaps a gift certificate to a vegetable market. A plant based cookbook or other plant strong book is also a good idea. I know a great cookbook; Plant Based Wellness Cookbook, three generations of plant based cooking, the Doctor, the Dietitian and the Diva.
There is a special treat at the end of the podcast: The Twelve Days of Plant Based Christmas. I hope you enjoy. If you would like a copy of the words, sign up for our newsletter at doctordulaney.com
Don't forget to get your tickets to our 5th Annual Plant Based Nutrition Conference, March 28, 2020 in Port Charlotte, Florida. Link is on the website.
Thank you for listening and Happy Healthy Plant Strong Holidays!

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 236-CIM Race Report
Friday Dec 13, 2019
Friday Dec 13, 2019
Welcome! and Thank you for listening. The California International Marathon is in the books. If you are a runner, I highly recommend this race. I have been running marathons since 2001 and have completed over 25 marathon races. I did not grow up a runner but started running in my late thirties as a way to stay in shape and fend off diabetes and cardiovascular disease. I grew up golfing which seems a lot different than running, but there are some similarities. There is a large mental component to both sports. Your head can certainly get in the way. I always thought you could tell a lot about a person by how they handled themselves on the golf course. Running a marathon is quite similar in that there are obstacles along the way with the ultimate outcome affected by how one confronts those obstacles. If that sounds a lot like life, well, then it is. Not every day is a good one, but there is always something to be learned and cherished.
I discuss my race in this episode, and yes, I chose to race this marathon not just run it to complete the task. I hope you find my account entertaining and can apply my lessons to your own challenges be they physical or nutritional. After all, life is a marathon and you can affect the outcome by how you choose to live it. Enjoy the journey and learn the lessons along the way.
Thank you for listening. Make sure to visit the website at doctordulaney.com or email me at Jami@doctordulaney.com with questions or comments. Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Did you take in too much food this weekend and not enough exercise? That is the norm for this time of year. It is not too late to get things back under control. The holiday season is a time of over eating and under exercising. With the average American taking in 4000 calories on Thanksgiving day followed by excessive intake on the days that follow, it could take 7-10 days to work those excess calories off. That would translate into running about 6 miles a day for the next week while decreasing daily intake down to pre holiday levels. Let's face it, cutting back a little is not going to cut it.
Studies discussed on this episode: How much exercise is too much? Are there quick fixes for knee pain and torn hamstrings? Should you add pomegranates to your diet? When do people realize they are overweight? Are our current weight loss stratagies effective?

Welcome! and Thank you for Listening. What does Paula Dean have to do with E-Cigs? How different is cheesy grits and bacon from E cigs when it comes to health. You cannot live on E cigs, but you can survive in some form eating greasy "comfort" foods as she describes. However, both will ultimately get you a shelf of medications and a multipage medical record. There is outrage about the 40 deaths and over 2000 people that became ill this year linked with E-cigs, but we readily turn a blind eye to nutrition as the main ingredient linked to hundreds of thousands of lives lost each year.
What is the best way to treat coronary artery disease. This week a new study called the Ischemia Trial was presented. It is great news for those adopting a plant based diet that can reverse cardiovascular disease. It is also a testimony that we do not have a medical therapy that reverses cardiovascular disease despite millions of dollars performing procedures and prescribing medical cocktails.
I hope you enjoy as I ponder these questions this week. Remember to visit the website at doctordulaney.com to learn about our practice, sign up for the newsletter, or register for our educational opportunities. Email me at jami@doctordulaney.com

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast: Episode 233-Save the Turkeys
Friday Nov 15, 2019
Friday Nov 15, 2019
Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Save a Turkey. Wouldn't it be nice if we had a peaceful Thanksgiving that promoted health and wellness? I am not wishing for it, but I intend to do my best to live it. No animal will give its life so that I can be thankful for having too much to eat.
Nutrition is the leading cause of disease in this country. It is not too little but too much. The solution is so simple to most of our health problems and perhaps will go along way to cure the ultimate disease, aging. Lifestyle diseases are just markers of aging. They can be delayed for sure by exercising and eating a plant based diet. But the time is now. Not tomorrow or next Thanksgiving, but now. Take the turkey off the table. Take the oil out of the gravy. Take the dairy out of the pie. Take back your health. Others will eventually follow, but only if you are brave enough to lead the way. I talk about this and much more during this episode.
Email me at Jami@doctordulaney.com with questions about our practice and mission to combat aging and lifestyle diseases. Peace and health to you and your family. Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Today I am joined by my registered dietitian, Addie Majnaric as we discuss my talk at the Concierge Medicine Today conference in Georgia.
It is easy to preach to the choir but not so nearly so easy to speak to those hearing a message that is contrary to what they are used to. The theme of the meeting was, you are unique. Physicians that step outside of the establishment of how medicine is practice might be considered unique or just fed up. But if we continue to practice medicine like we have for the past 70 years focusing on following lifestyle diseases instead of reversing them, we will not extend life expectancy or the quality of life. We have to change our approach and focus on reversal and prevention of lifestyle diseases such as high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, dementia and cancer instead of looking for ways to merely live with these chronic diseases.
Addie and I discuss this and much more. We are focused on improving quality longevity through a plant based diet and active lifestyle. We celebrate movement and plant foods in their most natural state in the right quantities to sustain an active life.

Jami Dulaney MD Plant Based Wellness Podcast Episode 230:
Saturday Oct 19, 2019
Saturday Oct 19, 2019
Welcome! and Thank you for listening. There are many marketing campaigns about finding a cure for various cancers and other maladies. Presidents have declared war on cancer and a commitment to ending heart disease. Millions of dollars are spent on pharmaceutical research. While this is all well and good, little effort is given to preventative campaigns. The American Heart Walks will begin in a few months. Again focus is on treatment instead of prevention. I liken these things to the football analogy of prevent defense. Let's be conservative in our efforts and hope the clock runs out before we loose the game. We prescribe medications to ease suffering until the body finally cannot live any longer.
In today's podcast, I discuss the mechanisms that risk factors cause disease. Being overweight is a disease of modern society. It is nearly impossible not to be with today's food choices. We don't realize that a few hundred extra calories each day translates into several thousand extra calories each year and over a million calories in 10 years!. Most adults struggle to keep that curve from going up steadily. We yoyo diet up and down trying to play prevent defense. The problem is the toxins we accumulate along with those added calories confounded by the hormones produced by the accumulated fat cells themselves.
We have to keep our focus on the goal. We have been led to believe that our happiness is connected only to the food we consume instead of life experiences. We are well served by eating vegetables, whole grains, and fruit. We have abundance of food available to us and even plant based foods can lead to over consumption and ultimately the diseases associated with being overweight. We have to regain our mindfulness of fueling our bodies in accordance to our metabolic needs.

Welcome! and Thank you for listening. Why does controversy seem to get the most attention? Shocking news! Those doctors can't make up their minds what is healthy. They want us sick? Healthy is not good for the economy.
You can win more friends with maple syrup than vinegar. Unless, you are Dr. Esselstyn who loves balsamic vinegar. Today I chat about what we all believe is healthy. The facts that we agree on when it comes to nutrition. We all agree that the risk factors for lifestyle diseases are the same whether it is cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. We are learning more about our gut microbiome everyday and its role in disease and health with regards to our immune system. So if we use a little common sense, and apply what we know to a food such as red meat for instance, it is hard to say that it will not cause disease when it contains all the ingredients of disease that we agree on.
Why must we take time to debate how much of a bad thing we can tolerate instead of how much of a good thing can we benefit from? How do we put together a plate that will do us the most good not cause us the least harm.
The most important thing you will do today is centered around maintaining the health of you and your love ones. Not money. Not things. Not places. You have the opportunity to positively impact the health of you and your family. Do not miss that opportunity by picking up process food in a plastic container or box. Prepare and present food that looks good, tastes good, and is good for you and your family. Set a healthy example of activity and enjoy the process.

Welcome! and Thank you for listening. This episode is a recap of Ironman Chattanooga. I completed the 144.6 mile course last Sunday in very hot and humid conditions. What does this have to do with plant based wellness?
Everything. It is about pushing beyond your comfort zone. It is about breaking a long day or a long journey down into manageable sections. Life is an endurance event. It is a challenge and an opportunity to grow and be grateful. Many of the obstacles that limit us are because we let them. The negative chatter in our heads starts to take over and escalates.
I hope you find this episode entertaining and motivational. Thank you for listening.
